Grow online (July 2023)
News from the world of online and growth marketing that you shouldn't miss.
Content
- UA is dead long live GA4
- Universal analytics definitively stopped collecting data while being replaced by GA4. In June some attribution models also ended in GA4 and in July also in Google Ads. Now is the good time to look at your account, look for potential changes in performance and measuring and make appropriate optimalizations.
- Use page feed for your PMax campaigns
- Google has updated its guide for Performance Max page feed campaigns. Check it out, it might make your life easier and improve your performance.
- Add your customer service info to GMC
- Now it’s quite easy to add your customer service phone number and/or e-mail to Google Merchant Center. I'm a big supporter of this one as dealing with customer problems is much better than having unsatisfied customers, getting a bad review and dealing with customer problems later.
Bing
- Bing’s ChatGPT integration got paused
- Users found a loophole in the integration on how to freely use paid-only content and used it. Well they didn’t smile for too long as OpenAI soon turned off the integration.
AI marketing
- AI results get worse in time in some cases
- It’s the complete opposite of what should be happening, but if you feed AI with AI generated content it will start losing its mind and reduce its answer success rate. It can go from 97, 6 % to 2,4 in just a month. Worth considering next time you ask it something.
ChatGPT
- ChatGPT iOs downloads slows down
- Both ChatGPT app and Bing app downloads slowed down MoM by 38 % in USA. In the same time, Google’s search engine market share grew to YoY to 92 %. It shows that ChatGPT / Bing has a long and uncertain road ahead if they want to compete with Google in search.
Bard
- Bard is available in EU
- Finally, Bard is available in EU and Brazil. And not just that. It can now also speak and respond to prompts with images making the competition with ChatGPT even more intense.
Llama 2
- Meta is joining the fierce AI competition
- In partnership with Microsoft Meta released new open-sourced language model Llama 2 free for research and commercial use. That’s ideal for creating apps on the platform.
Social media
- Meta released Threads
- Meta introduced a new app which looks pretty much like Twitter.
- And it hit more than 100M users in just few days as the new fastest growing app in history.
- But. Active users are down by more than half after 3 weeks since platform's release.
- It just confirms that social media industry is everything but predictable for new platforms. Now let’s see what Musk had to say on this …
- First, tweets are available again to logged-out users
- Few days after Twitter stopped showing tweets to logged-out users it enabled the function again.
- Then Twitter rebranded to X
- Probably one of the biggest news in social media lately you might have heard of. But. There is kind of general negative consensus on it in marketing circles despite the fact that it may have overshadowed the launch of Threads. Mark Ritson summarizes why is this a mistake pretty well.
- Finally (for now) Twitter blocks links to Threads
- Not such important news, but certainly both interesting and kind of funny. Twitter started to block links to Threads.
- Musk reduces Twitter, uh sorry, X’s scraping and viewing options
- Did you find ‘X’s’ hard to read? I know you did. It shows instantly why the rebranding is a mistake now, disregarding this anticipated move which makes lives of all types of (non)users on X even more inconvenient.
- Promote your employee posts on LinkedIn
- LinkedIn released a new feature which enables you to promote posts from your employees. People like to follow people on LinkedIn, so this is quite useful.
- LinkedIn reach algorithm has changed
- LinkedIn recently changed it’s algorithm prioritizing more professional content. Here you can read more on the topic.
- Meta won’t share publisher news in Canada
- In reaction to Canada news act, Meta decided not to share news in the country from the publishers instead of paying them. And Google does the same by removing such links in its search results.
- TikTok has Ads transparency center
- Same as on other advertising platforms, you can see TikTok ads of your competitors. Available only in Europe for now.
Marketing stats
- Spotify still reigns the music streaming industry
- Running a podcast? Then you should consider these numbers on usage of audio platforms.
- Facebook hits 3B monthly active users
- As the first social network to do so, Facebook gets 3 billion monthly active users. Pretty impressive.
Online privacy and security
- Norway bans Meta behavioral ads
- Norway put a 3 month ban on Facebook and Instagram behavioral ads. And it will not lift it until they will comply with Norwegian law.
SEO
- 301 Redirect or 404 Error Page? Pick yours..
- Which one is more harmful, 301 Redirect or 404 Error page? Allegedly both are equally harmless. So don’t worry and go with the one which makes more sense for your case.
That's all highlights from July.
